The iconic TV show, Friends, has been a Pop Culture phenomenon, ever since it made its way into the hearts of
viewers worldwide September 22, 1994.
The show’s popularity inspired clothing, hair styles and coffee shop culture to it’s millions of fans around the world. The style of the colorful and funky set designs became a feature of the show and, simultaneously, the artwork of Pop Artist Burton Morris, whose artwork frequently hung in the background of Central Perk coffee shop, quickly became associated with one of the hottest TV shows around.
Starting with the 3rd episode, (Ross) David Schwimmer, wore a tee shirt of Burton’s pop art creation of a baseball player. From there, creator Kevin Bright met with Burton at the start of the first season to choose paintings to display on the show. Over the years, the show featured over a dozen original pop art paintings and designs in Central Perk coffee shop such as the steaming Coffee Cup, Statue of Liberty, King Kong and Uncle Sam to name a few.
All in all, Burton’s paintings were seen in over 70 episodes throughout the course of Friends’ ten seasons and Burton’s pop icons became instantly recognizable and part of pop culture history.
Original artworks by Burton have been commissioned for corporations and institutions such as The White House, The United Na-tions, Coca Cola Corporation, Ford Motors, Sony, H.J. Heinz, Chanel Corporation, Rolex, Warner Brothers, Perrier, AT&T, Microsoft, and Kellogg’s. Morris' artwork is featured in the collections of The Albright-Knox Museum, The Jimmy Carter Center, The Elysée Museum, The United Nations, The World of Coca-Cola Museum and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Collectors of his work include Brad Pitt, Kanye West, Tommy Hilfiger, Oprah Winfrey, Stan Lee, Roy Disney, Andre Ag-assi, Emeril Lagasse and President Barack Obama. In addition, his artwork has helped to raise millions of dollars for charities worldwide.
